What is a Dental Crown?

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are prostheses that replace the lost structure of a tooth, in all its periphery. Depending on their material, they can be: completely metallic, metal-porcelain, metal-free, lithium and zirconium discilicate.

How do I know if I am a candidate for dental crowns?

When a tooth loses its structure due to decay or fracture and is weakened and unable to chew, it is peripherally restored with a crown. This protects the tooth from masticatory forces and gives it back its function and aesthetics. The material will depend on several factors such as the strength and configuration of the bite, the type of tooth that is restored and the opposing tooth (with which it collides in the opposite arch)

Do dental crowns damage my tooth?

Normally when a crown is chosen as a treatment it is because the tooth is already damaged and requires a restoration to survive in the mouth as long as possible. A well-placed crown protects the tooth so that the root is not affected and can remain functional for many more years.
